Current Ministries in Uruguay

History of OMS in Uruguay

In 2002 the OMS Board of Trustees officially approved Uruguay as a field of OMS and, in early 2003, OMS initiated ministry in cooperation with Christ Church of Montevideo.

OMS-UY is a multicultural, bi-lingual, partnership team who have joined together around a common vision to lead and serve a church in Montevideo, Uruguay. Originally adopted as a missionary outreach of the Bogotá Unicentro Church, the OMS-UY team has grown into its own identity in Montevideo.

Christ Church of Montevideo is an interdenominational, unaffiliated congregation with a modest history that grew out of the Methodist missionary work in the early part of the 20th century. Originally bilingual, the church is currently a gathering place for some of the English-speaking Uruguayans connected with the “anglo-community” (where John Hamilton’s maternal family roots lie) as well as members of the diverse international community that flourishes in Montevideo.

Uruguayans as a rule revere their historical institutions almost as much as they distrust outside intervention. By trying to understand and appreciate the spiritual traditions and heritage already in place, we are seeking to establish trust-based relationships as the foundation for all we do.

The Uruguay missionaries make up a diverse team, being led by John and Lisa Hamilton. OMS-UY has been fully integrated with Christ Church since 2005. The Christ Church web site (www.christchurchmvd.org) is designed to help people connect and interact with the ministry on an ongoing basis. Please visit the site and feel free to respond to an audio message, a blog, or with a simple e-mail. Your input and prayers are always appreciated.
