Mozambique Prayer Requests

July 1-7, 2009

MOZAMBIQUE—Lift up Aimee Howarth, preparing for her move to Mozambique in two weeks to begin her first term in ministry with women’s ministries. Pray for a good transition to her ministry.

Focus prayers of intercession on the OMS-related denomination and the many newly formed churches. This year, the number of churches has increased to more than 100, and they have noticed more spiritual warfare. Their vision to have a strong church-planting work in each province is moving forward. Pray that they will be prepared and will stand strong in Christ.

June 24-30, 2009

MOZAMBIQUE—ECC coordinator Juka Fernando is traveling to the Nampula Province this week for meetings, training and oversight of the work with trainer, Paito Halari. The Nampula work has struggled this past year. Pray for a renewal and revival of the work and in the hearts of the church planters and the Halari family. Pray for wisdom to direct the Village Church Planting work in the remote areas of Mozambique where physical needs are so great. Ask God to strengthen all of the workers to remain faithful to the Gospel and implement the VCP plan. The Nampula work will celebrate another baptism this week. The training centers north of the Zambezi River are averaging one baptism service a week! Praise God for this increase.

Pray for an awareness of the many staffing needs they have in Mozambique, most acutely needed, a seminary director. Join the OMS team in praying for this strategic ministry. The Mozambique seminary is central and key to the work.

David and Sarah (Dedrick) Henderson will visit Mozambique. Ask for God’s protection on this much-needed family visit.

June 10-16, 2009

MOZAMBIQUE—Nancy Hesch, OMS roving librarian, leaves Saturday after her three-month assignment at Christian Academy in Mozambique. Pray for safe travel as she returns to Oregon and for wisdom as she moves forward with decisions regarding future assignments and medical issues.

Larry and Susan Weil leave on Saturday to represent the Mozambique field at the annual meetings at OMS/Greenwood and at OMS’ Missions in the Midwest Family Retreat. Pray for safety as they travel briefly in the United States and Canada with recruiting assignments. Ask God to anoint them with His message and protect them during this busy month.

Pray for a safe return for Dave and Ann Dedrick from Zambezia Province. Ask God to facilitate the board of advisors meeting about the seminary and ECC programs with His wisdom and grace. Daniel Maduel and Xavier Massingue will be presenting along with Dave Dedrick. Ask God to prepare the advisors’ hearts to offer good counsel at this meeting.

June 3-9, 2009

MOZAMBIQUE—During the next few months, visitors will be coming and going. New missionary Aimee Howarth will arrive, and Larry and Susan Weil will travel to OMS headquarters. Ask God to cover Mozambique in peace during this time, and ask for travel mercies and guidance. May each visitor be in prayer in anticipation of ministry here.

Pray for the funding that Melvin and Sharon Kelly need to go to Mozambique as career missionaries. They will attend the OMS Missions in the Midwest Retreat, CROSS Training in July and then return to Ireland to continue friend raising. Specifically ask God to bless their deputation ministry. May those who hear them speak be moved to support them, both financially and prayerfully. Melvin and Sharon plan to minister in compassionate ministries and assist in all of the ministries of OMS in Mozambique.

May 27-June 4, 2009

MOZAMBIQUE—Gabriel, son of Mike and Sarah Thiessen, came through his surgery well on May 4. The tumor was not attached to any other organ. As a precaution, they did remove his gall bladder and took a bit of the covering of his large intestine that the tumor was resting against. They were able to remove the tumor on his lung. They had to take about 25 percent of his liver, which is quite good. The doctors felt it all went well and could not see any other signs of cancer. Gabe will start chemo in June to make sure all the cancer is eradicated. Rejoice and do keep on praying for a full recovery. He was able to come home from the hospital the day before his third birthday. Especially remember Sarah as the new baby is due in early June.

Remember Dave and Ann Dedrick, traveling to Zambezia Province this week for quarterly meetings with ECC country coordinator, Juka Fernando. They will discuss moving the land processes forward at the Mocuba and Gurue ministry centers and general ministry in the Zambezia and Nampula provinces.

May 20-26, 2009

MOZAMBIQUE—The school year at Christian Academy in Mozambique is nearing the end of the school year. Graduation is scheduled for June 9 for the two seniors. The school picnic is scheduled for this Saturday at Boa Nova. Pray for these two events. Praise God for His provision this year with teachers and for the many blessings witnessed within the student body. Several students in the high school have given their lives to Christ. Praise God! Many of the students come from non-Christian homes. The words of one student: “When I returned to my home country and saw the religious practice of my family, I knew it was false and Jesus is the true God.” Pray for these kids. God is faithful.

Pray for protection and healing for Cacilda Maduel, two-year-old daughter of Daniel and Luisa Maduel, who has been diagnosed with asthma. Daniel is a denominational leader and works at the Maputo Biblical and Theological Seminary. Ask for God’s healing, provision, wisdom and peace.

In Khongolote, a man died recently, leaving a young widow, twin boys (age 7) and a little girl. His family confiscated all property and possessions, and the wife and children are homeless. The Khongolote church is trying to intervene, be God’s witness and mediate the dispute. Pray for the church to be a powerful witness to the man’s unchurched family. May God work all of this out in His beautiful way.

May 13th-19th, 2009

MOZAMBIQUE—Groundwork for the seminary program is ongoing from Canada, where Mike Thiessen is diligently working, and in Maputo where Xavier Massingue and Daniel Maduel, professors, are taking preparatory steps to continue the development phase. The missionary team is working together to accomplish foundational tasks as they continue to recruit for a seminary director. Obstacles continue. Ask God to show them the solution to the supply difficulty with the books. The current supplier of books is unable to continue to provide these books under the existing partnership. Pray for knowledge to know how to proceed.

Pray for the ECC program in Mozambique to finalize the agreement between OMS and Igreja Evangelica Palavra Viva. Also pray for the new committee, beginning to conduct meetings and business. Pray for Juka Fernando, coordinator, traveling to Nampula for a supervisory visit of the workers and work in this province. While there, he will finalize the translations of the chronological Bible Storytelling in Makua, a joint effort of the Nazarene and Wesleyan churches and OMS.

Ask God to empower the missionaries and national workers who co-labor in the task of evangelism and training. Pray that God will bring a great “hunger for the lost” among those who labor.
