Mozambique Prayer Requests

August 20th-26th, 2008

MOZAMBIQUE—Melvin and Sharon Kelly and a team of four others are in Mozambique to visit the ECC work in the north part of the country, volunteer at a local orphanage and assist churches with ministry construction projects. The team of four departs September 5, and Melvin and Sharon will remain in Mozambique until the end of November to work with discipleship and ministry development and to assist the OMS team. They are seeking God’s guidance as they explore ministry options for long-term service in Mozambique.

The field leadership team is beginning to develop the field plan and budget, using the recent annual field council input. Pray as they submit all ministry to Christ and the mission of OMS.

ECC has new teams in the south. Boldly ask God to anoint these men for His service and to bring them quick success in each gathering and in training 15 men to plant churches.

August 13-19th, 2008

MOZAMBIQUE—Pray for the Mozambique field council meetings from August 15 to 17. OMS South Africa Regional Director Bruce Bennett will join the team for these important meetings. Pray for vision and unity for the ministries as they plan for next year. The missionaries need the Lord’s leading and strength to carry out the growing ministries.

Christian Academy in Mozambique has finished the majority of the security upgrades. Pray for new teachers and students to settle in well. Pray especially for Julia, our newest teacher, who is Zimbabwean and will teach second grade. Pray that OMS can apply for a work visa for her and her two children so she can remain in Mozambique.

Continue to pray for the national church and its leaders. Pray that they know how to helpfully correct the church discipline document without the church leaders feeling all their hard work has been in vain. The Mozambican board of advisors is willing to meet with the church leaders and committee to discuss the document and give counsel in it.

Aug 6-12, 2008

MOZAMBIQUE—Classes at Christian Academy in Mozambique (CAM) begin on August 7. We seek your prayers throughout the year as we provide the best Christian education for more than 40 children from K-12. Pray for our new teachers and students to adjust quickly to life at CAM and that our returning students can be a great help and encouragement to the new ones. PTL, most of the security upgrades at CAM are finished or soon will be. We are appreciative of these upgrades as they will provide better security and protection for the students and staff.

Next week, Franz Bense, from South Africa, goes to train 30-40 from our churches in Bible story telling using drama. This is a great opportunity for the Church to reach out to their own members and a unique ministry opportunity for those who don’t know the Lord.

Pray as we prepare for our annual field council meetings from August 15-17. Bruce Bennett, from South Africa, will be joining us as we seek the Lord’s guidance and wisdom for the vision of ministries for next year and beyond.

The ESL program is a wonderful opportunity to reach out to the middle class and give them the opportunity to worship with the Maputo City Church. Classes are finished for now. Pray that the church will capture the vision of carrying on this ministry.

July 23-29

MOZAMBIQUE—Uplift Christian Academy in Mozambique (CAM), preparing to begin classes in two weeks. The security upgrade construction continues as well as cleaning, organizing and preparing for a new academic year. Pray for the needed teachers, especially a second grade teacher. Next week the Gaunts, a couple from the UK, are going for three weeks to help out at CAM and with church ministries. Pray for future ministry opportunities wherever the Lord calls them.

Pray for Dinis, Nelson and Paito, ECC coordinators in the northern provinces of Zambezia and Nampula. Recent reports suggest there could be some problems and issues that need to be addressed, and it is difficult when the OMS team is more than 1,500 miles away. Pray that the Lord will continue to open up doors of ministry in the more than 25 churches that have been planted in the north during the past three years.

Continue to pray for the seminary building construction. Although most is finished, there are some items that continue to linger and create difficulties. Pray that the company who was supposed to install the elevator will contact the OMS office and explain the problems they are having as well as solutions to get the elevator working. Fortunately, they don’t need the elevator for the seminary building to function.

Juky 9-15, 2008

MOZAMBIQUE—Dave and Ann Dedrick arrived back on July 7 from a mini furlough. They will be moving to a new home this month that is closer to the rural church ministries, but is 15 miles from Maputo. Pray for this transition as well as opportunities to study Portuguese and assuming their ministry responsibilities again.

This is a critical month at Christian Academy in Mozambique (CAM), with several school projects to be completed, including the security upgrades around the building. There are still many teacher positions to fill, so pray as the staff seeks to provide the best education for the students. Larry and Susan Weil seek your prayers. CAM occupies much of their time and they need the Lord’s vision and wisdom on how to direct the school. Pray for a good solution to share some of their other mission responsibilities.

Mike and Sarah Thiessen are settling in well in their home and language study. Continue to pray for their transition as well as sorting out some banking issues which are making it hard to function without a reliable means of getting money into their account for living expenses.

Pray for the meeting between the OMS Mozambique advisors and the church leaders and discipline committee as the advisors encourage and give direction to how best to develop an effective document that will lead the church for the future.

July 2-8

MOZAMBIQUE—Much prayer is needed about the discipline committee’s document as it is missing many important aspects of the church and its vision. Pray for an upcoming meeting and for the results as they seek to move the church forward.

Christian Academy in Mozambique needs prayer for many projects that are going on during the school break. One of the security upgrades was denied by the government, so a new design must be made and submitted. Pray this goes well. They are having difficulty finding qualified teachers for this school year, so ask the Lord to provide all the teachers as well as sufficient students to cover the expenses of the next school year.

June 18-24th, 2008

MOZAMBIQUE—The security upgrades begin this at Christian Academy in Mozambique (CAM). Pray for all the permits for these upgrades to be given so work can begin on time and end before August 1 when classes begin. Becca Pullin is helping at CAM, preparing for the next school year; she is also translating student testimonies. Ask God to give her clear direction for her future. Praise the Lord that one new teacher has been found for the next school year, but more teachers and a school director are still needed.

Pray for the new seminary director, Mike Thiessen, as he and his wife Sarah are now in language class and getting to know the people and culture here. Their boys, Simon, 4, and Gabriel, 2, are adjusting to a much different life than they had in Canada.

Samuel Palisse Mussaco, Christian micro-economic development coordinator, is receiving further training in Nampula. This is a great opportunity for Samuel to gain good information and to talk directly with other organizations that are doing micro-finance in Mozambique

Meetings continue with the national church leaders about the discipline and its revisions. Remember this process in prayer, and pray that the revisions will be accepted and understood by the church and its leaders.
