The Untold Stories of Colombia

The Untold Stories of Colombia is an hour long documentary that tells the stories behind how some of the most vicious killers in the world found a new way to live.

Medellín, Colombia is the most violent city in the world. In 1982 an ongoing civil war heightened when Pablo Escobar began using Medellín as a base to transport illegal drugs all over the world. But this was not the only issue facing the residents of Medellín. Illegal guerrilla forces, such as the FARC, the paramilitary, the M-19 and the AUC fought for what they thought was a better life. They robbed milk trucks and gave the milk to the poor in order to recruit people for their cause and they raided villages and neighborhoods and violently forced children to become soldiers in their war.

In 1984, to help control the ever-growing violence, the Bellavista prison was built. But the war on the streets continued inside the prison walls and violence soon controlled the prison. On average there were 50 murders a month in the prison, and sometimes as many as 20 a day. Bellavista quickly became one of the most violent prisons in the world.

When a church and a Bible institute were started inside Bellavista, the violence stopped and for a year there were no murders inside the prison. The world's most vicious criminals started turning away from the violence of their past. The lives of the inmates were radically transformed and life in the prison changed. In the past 16 years, there have been only 15 deaths inside Bellavista.

Now Bellavista is the least dangerous prison in all of Latin America. The men whose violent lives put them in the prison now run the prison ministry. These are their stories.

All proceeds from this documentary go directly to support this on-going prison ministry.
