Thane and Laura Ury
Teachers/Disciplers
Thane and Laura Ury joined OMS International in 2004, appointed to teach at the United Wesleyan Graduate Institute (UWGI) in Hong Kong. Thane grew up in the Far East, and in the mid-80s, he and Laura pastored at the Chinese United Methodist Church in Chinatown, New York. While in Chinatown, Thane felt the tug to further his education. Thus, when a position opened in the Religion and Philosophy Department at Bethel College, the prospect also arose to begin a doctoral degree. Thane began teaching at Bethel in 1989, starting Ph.D. studies two years later. For 15 years he taught Old and New Testaments, apologetics, philosophy and systematic theology. In 2001, he completed his doctoral thesis, which is now being prepared for publication.
Thane holds a bachelor of science degree from Asbury College, an M.Div. from Asbury Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. in systematic theology from Andrew University. In addition to teaching at Bethel, he has taught by adjunct in Asia, Romania, Nigeria and Trinidad. He also has spoken at numerous men’s, church and youth retreats.
Laura grew up the child of Salvation Army officers, earned a B.A. in art from Asbury College, has illustrated three published books and has had work published in the War Cry, the official publication of the Salvation Army. She has taught art for many years, both privately and at the Granger Christian and Bethel College art departments. She continues to be involved in women’s and children’s ministries.
Dr. Ury teaches theology courses at UWGI, writes books and handles some administrative responsibilities. Laura teaches at International Christian School (ICS). Both are committed to discipling disciple makers and leaders for the Asia of tomorrow.
The Urys have four children. Cameron (24) attends Wesley Biblical Seminary; Bethany (21) is an Asbury College junior; Bryce (16) and Lauren (13) both attend ICS in Hong Kong.
