Stephen and Barbara Duhrkoop

Teacher/Database Development

Stephen and Barbara Duhrkoop are missionaries serving in Japan with OMS International. Working at the Christian Academy in Japan in Tokyo, they minister to English-speaking children from the missionary, business and diplomatic communities. Stephen teaches social studies and serves as senior class advisor, which includes supervising the senior ministry trip to a third world country. Barbara works in the school business office as accounting coordinator and doing database development. Stephen also teaches English Bible and preaches once a month at the OMS-related church in Iruma as part of their outreach program.

Stephen graduated from George Fox College in 1975, then attended the University of Oregon and received his master’s degree in education in 1981, majoring in curriculum and education. That same year, he went to Japan to teach at the academy. He met Barbara there, and they were married in 1983.

Barbara graduated in 1976 with a degree in math from Huntington College (Indiana) and then returned to Japan where her parents were missionaries with the Christian Church. A graduate of Christian Academy, she has worked at CAJ since 1976.

The Duhrkoops say of their work in Japan, “We are ministering in a country that has been an economic giant and to a people who seem to be self-sufficient, but they are in great spiritual need. Today, they face a breakdown of the family and many people have great personal needs. This is an excellent opportunity for us to help the Japanese laity to reach their own spiritually desperate people.”

The Duhrkoops have two grown children, Joshua and Pamela.
