Extended Missionary Service
Joining OMS International in 1968 as missionaries to Taiwan, Bill and Becky Swathwood have most recently served as missionaries in Hong Kong. In partnership with the Hong Kong Evangelical Churches, they coordinated an English program as an evangelistic outreach.
The Swathwoods’ Taiwan ministry involved teaching at Morrison Academy, a school for missionary children, in Taichung. Bill taught English, journalism, speech, drama, and Bible. He also directed the drama program and was sponsor for the school newspaper and yearbook. From 1980-82 he taught English at Chung Hsing University in Taichung and worked closely with the OMS student center on campus.
From 1984-1990 they were reassigned to the Philippines. Bill taught English and drama at the high school and Becky at the elementary level of Faith Academy in Manila. With grades kindergarten through 12, the academy meets the educational needs of over 600 missionary kids representing 60 mission organizations.
Becky taught several elementary grades and English as a Second Language at both schools. In Taiwan, she led weekly English Bible classes for Chinese in their home. In Manila she was involved in Bible studies for women and discipled women individually.
Bill and Becky completed undergraduate studies at Asbury College and have graduate degrees from Ball State University in Muncie, IN. In addition, Bill holds an M. Div. from Asbury Theological Seminary.
After 20 years of teaching missionary kids in Taiwan and the Philippines, the Swathwoods spent two years in East Asia teaching English at a university and the last 10 years in Hong Kong.
They have two children. Their son, Todd, is married with four children and is an orthopedic surgeon. Their daughter, Tammy, is a registered nurse, a pastor’s wife and mother of twin daughters.
