Why Support a Homeland Missionary?
At OMS International, we consider homeland staff, as well as overseas personnel, missionaries because we recognize the vital role they play in virtually everything OMS does. The homeland missionaries communicate the OMS story through print media, DVDs and the website. Others buy and ship supplies, make travel arrangements, organize prayer support and process and mail thousands of prayer letters. Some use their skills in accounting, bookkeeping or information technology, while others recruit new missionaries or contact churches to schedule meetings for field missionaries on home assignment.
The OMS homeland missionaries, just like OMS field missionaries, are required to raise their support. As they raise their support, homeland missionaries often hear, “we want to support a ‘real’ missionary, not someone who works in an office in the United States.” Some churches, by policy, support only overseas missionaries. The problem is often compounded by the fact that many of the headquarters staff (homeland missionaries), those that carry the heaviest loads, never have time to visit churches, present their needs and raise support. As a result, they often find it discouraging and difficult to raise support. Homeland missionaries are highly gifted individuals, and many have left secure pastorates or lucrative careers in law, business, banking, accounting, journalism and graphic design to serve God in the cause of missions.
Other enterprises understand the strategic importance of behind the scenes workers. For every successful salesman there are workers manufacturing the product, keeping records and accounts and shipping merchandise. In the military, soldiers fighting on the front lines would not succeed without support personnel serving behind the lines./p>
God’s work operates in the same way. In today's complicated world, without support staff, missionaries could not spend the time on the field needed to maintain a stable and consistent ministry. The financial needs for homeland missionaries could easily be met if everyone who supports an overseas missionary would also help support a homeland missionary.
If you would like to be part of supporting the ministry of a homeland missionary by prayer or giving, you can use our contact form and someone will personally introduce you to a homeland missionary who needs your support. You can learn more about missionaries serving in our offices by visiting the homeland office pages on our web site and reading the profiles of homeland missionaries:
Donations may also be sent to the address below. Please be sure to attach a note indicating the name and id of the ministry or the missionary or project to which you would like to contribute.
