How Are OMS Missionaries Funded?

OMS International is an interdenominational, faith-based mission. This means our missionaries are supported by the gifts and prayers of churches, families and friends, not by a particular church denomination.

Most gifts are given through faith promises. Wesley Haines defines a faith promise as “a financial commitment to missions based upon an inner persuasion that God wants you to give that amount to missions, an amount not necessarily dependent upon known or anticipated resources.” Faith promise giving for both individuals and churches bases the ability to give not on what you can give of your own ability, but on what you will trust God to give through you.

Second Corinthians 8 and 9 exemplifies this type of missionary giving in the early church. In 2 Corinthians 8:3-4, Paul writes, “For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability…they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints.” NIV

A faith promise is not a portion of a tithe. Tithes already belong to God. Faith promise giving goes beyond the tithe.

It is not a pledge. A pledge is horizontal, promised by the donor to a worthy cause. By contrast, a faith promise is vertical, between you and God.

Those who have participated in faith promise giving have experienced dramatic results. For example, they have discovered that:

  • God supplies - God’s abundant resources are released in unexpected ways through those otherwise unable to give.
  • It’s contagious - By seeing how God provides for those involved in the faith promise giving, those who are uninvolved often catch the vision of missionary giving.
  • Abundant blessing - Fulfilling our primary assignment of reaching the unreached brings God’s abundant blessing both financially and spiritually.

OMS International offers assistance to local churches in planning for faith promise events and missionary conferences. To find out how we can help your church increase its involvement in missions, use our contact form.
